About this journey

The Old Town rewards walking and punishes hurrying. This is the version with time built into it.

Four hundred years of Venice, fifty of France and fifty of Britain, stacked on top of each other in a few hundred metres. We walk the Campiello where the laundry still crosses the street, the Liston where the arcades are a copy of the Rue de Rivoli, the Spianada that the Venetians cleared for their cannon, and Saint Spyridon, where the island keeps its saint. Museum tickets are yours to choose; the streets are the point.

A day, as it usually runs

Indicative. Order and stops are rearranged with you the evening before.

1. The Campiello

   The oldest quarter, where the lanes are too narrow for cars and the laundry still crosses overhead.

2. Liston & Spianada

   The French arcades and the parade ground the Venetians cleared for their guns.

3. Saint Spyridon

   The church that holds the island’s patron saint, and the bell tower you navigate by.

4. Old Fortress

   The Venetian bastions, the contrafossa and St George’s Church on the far side.
